It came to my attention that the site’s been broken in Windows Internet Explorer for a while, with the navigation and sidebar content way down the bottom of the page. Sorry about that, it was a ‘broken box model’ issue triggered by a teensy bit of padding on the nav links which I’d neglected to fully test in IE Windows. And for those who prefer their explanations in plain English - it was a problem caused by the fact that Internet Explorer is one of the singularly worst pieces of bug-infested trash ever bungled together.
Now I know that might raise a few hackles, even amongst those of the geek persuasion (who should know better), and yes I know it comes bundled with Windows and PC users are probably really used to it, but there’s no getting around the fact that it’s poorly designed, renders web sites incorrectly, and is shot through with security holes like a collander which compromise the safety of your data and leave your machine wide open to malicious hijack. Why else do you think the US government has issued warnings in the past for people to stop using it?
Yes IE7 is a slight improvement, but it’s still a mess. What’s the point of having international web standards if one manufacturer is going to blatantly ignore them and continue holding back the development of the web for everyone? So please, those of you who are viewing this site in various versions of IE, do yourselves a massive favour and at least think about switching to a proper standards-compliant browser, such as Firefox or Opera (both of which are free, and contain features, like full text zoom, which Internet Explorer doesn’t). Your web surfing experience will be way better, (not to mention quicker), you’ll be supporting the development of the web, and as an added bonus you won’t be contributing to keeping web developers awake all night fixing “problems” which shouldn’t even exist.
Here endeth the rant for the day. Sorry about that.
